Why Not Let Someone Else Take the Pictures for Once

As cameras became simple and dropped in price, everyone became an amateur photographer. Then with digital photography so accessible, the average person can not only take the pictures, but print them or distribute them online for little cost. In spite of this, there are some good reasons, at least sometimes, to let others do the picture taking.

First, if you are the family photographer, you know the bondage it can be to always be looking for the ‘perfect shot’. To be good you must think like a photographer. Too often you realize that, after all was done, you had the pictures without even enjoying the reason you were there? Recently we got a call to watch a TV station to see our granddaughter in a parade. I spent the time trying to get the camera to focus on the TV and missed seeing her. I wish I had just enjoyed the moment and waited until they sent the pictures.

Agreed, the electronics in cameras make them very versatile. However, the more ‘stuff’ a camera can do, the more there is to keep track of. What do all those little pictures on top of the camera mean? How do you turn the auto focus or flash off and on? What do the letters P, TV, Av, or M on the selection switch mean? Unless you use these features regularly, you will find it difficult to keep it all in your mind, and if you don’t the features are as good as missing from the camera.

If you are going to be the photographer at an event, you will need to get in some conspicuous place so you can get just the right angle. Further, many people are self-conscious and don’t like their picture taken. When they don’t smile, you may need to almost bribe or shame them into posing. Wouldn’t it be nice if someone else were the bad guy next time?

So you do it anyway and get a camera full of shots. Now you are the hero whom others figure has all the time in the world to send them CDs filled with all your good shots. Or they may be sending you an email asking you to post the pictures online or send them as attachments to your email.

But it’s more than just the time involved. Though digital photography need never be printed, some friends simply don’t have access to this media. They will probably want you to print the pictures and this means lots of expensive ink and paper. Did you say you don’t have a printer? In that case, make sure you get one that has six or more different color cartridges since you will be replacing each one often.

If you want to look touristy, you will if you have a camera hanging around your neck and you take plenty of pictures. Oh, and don’t be shocked if people are offended that your picture taking seems to be more important than they are.

If you have a plugged toilet, you get a plunger and fix it. But when a major problem arises, you take it to a mechanic. That is also true of photography. Don’t get rid of your camera. But when a major event comes up, why don’t you get an expert to take the pictures and you just concentrate on enjoying yourself for a change.

When you want your photos done right, choosing the best photographer for your needs is worth the investment. If you follow the principles above, you will likely be glad you had it done professionally.
